Policy Overview

Governed by the General Law of Population. Permits are strictly categorized as 'Visitante' (Short-term) or 'Residente' (Long-term).

Short-Term Entry & Tourist Rules

The Visitor Permit (FMM) allows for stays up to 180 days max and cannot be extended. Crucially, you cannot switch from Tourist to Resident inside Mexico unless it is via 'Family Unity' (marriage/child).

Long-Term Residency Paths

Economic Solvency (Temporary or Permanent)
The Remote Worker / Retiree

Financials: Monthly income of ~$4,356 USD (Temp) or ~$7,301 USD (Perm). Savings: ~$73,389 (Temp) or ~$293,572 (Perm) for 2026.

Path: Starts at a consulate abroad. You get a sticker, then have 30 days to exchange it for a card at an INM office in Mexico.

Employer Sponsorship
The Local Hire

Path: Requires a job offer from a Mexican company with a current 'Constancia de Empleador.' The company handles the initial filing.

Temporary Resident Student Visa
The Student

Income: Proof of monthly income (~$1,395 USD) or savings (~$13,950 USD).

Note: Note that unlike the general residency visa, student visas do not always lead directly to permanent residency time-credits.

Right of Blood (Jus Sanguinis)
Ancestry & Heritage Path

Path: If at least one parent was born in Mexico, you are a Mexican citizen. You can claim this at any age at a Consulate.

Family Inclusion (Family Unity)

Spouses, common-law partners, children under 18, and parents are eligible to apply under a primary applicant.
